11/13/2008 - Updates

  • The SFBS CWEA December Dinner Meeting will be held at Spenger's in Berkeley on December 4, 2008. The meeting will be a "Family Night" and will include a performance by Doug Nolan from Rock Steady Juggling, who will use juggling virtuosity, magic, and humor to teach you and your family about stormwater, wastewater, and pollution prevention. Children under 18 years of age are free. To reserve your spot contact Polly Villarreal of East Bay Municipal Utility District at cweasfbs@aol.com for dinner reservations by Wednesday, November 26, 2008.  Please include your name, agency or company affiliation, menu selection and the number of adults and children attending.   • Voting for the 2009 2nd Year Director for the SFBS is now open. There are three deserving candidates on the ballot. Please fill out your ballot and submit it to Rick Chan via mail, fax or email. Ballots must be received or postmarked by December 10, 2008.
  • The SFBS Safety Committee will be holding a meeting on December 9, 2008 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at The Covello Group Office, 1660 Olympic Blvd., Ste. 300 in Walnut Creek. The agenda for the meeting will include, begin development of the committee’s mission and action plan to achieve, discussion of current safety issues encountered by members and how they are resolved, networking among Safety Professionals and discussion of committee officer(s) for committee elections (likely held in February 2009). Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to Ed O'Brien at eobrien@covellogroup.com. Formalized agendas will be emailed to those that RSVP in advance of the meeting.  Directions to The Covello Group will be included at that time.
  • The CWEA Bay Section Student Activities Committee, in conjunction with Contra Costa County ACE team and ASCE YMF, is hosting an informational meeting on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 6:00PM at Carollo Engineers in Walnut Creek.  The ACE Mentor Program is a nationwide after-school program that works to expose high school students to the fields of architecture, construction, and engineering through mentoring. Professionals of all levels of experience are invited to come learn about the program and how to become an ACE mentor.  Please see the attached flyer for more details.

  • The SFBS Safety Committee is back in action and will be meeting before this Thursday's (11/6) monthly dinner meeting at 5:00 PM at the bar inside the Walnut Creek Marriot. This will be an open forum round table discussion covering current safety related challenges and ideas.  Please bring any safety related topics you wish to discuss.  Come join the discussion for a great networking opportunity. No RSVP necessary for the Safety Committee Meeting. Contact Ed O’Brien at eobrien@covellogroup.com with any questions/comments.

  • The Professional Development Committee will be hosting a one-day seminar on "Natural Treatment Systems and Sustainable Technologies for the Wastewater Treatment Industry." The seminar will be held on November 6, 2008 at Hs Lordships in Berkeley.   • KCSM, the PBS station out of San Mateo, is scheduled to show "Liquid Assets: The Story of Our Water Infrastructure" on 10/22 at 9:00 pm and on 10/24 at 2:00 am. CWEA and our local agencies continue to lobby the other local PBS stations, including KQED, to air the program.  Visit the Liquid Assets web site (http://liquidassets.psu.edu/) for more info and to see how you can help to get this on the air.

ACE Mentoring Informational Meeting
