What is your current role and how did you get interested in the wastewater industry?

I am a Grade III wastewater treatment plant operator at the Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District. My journey into the wastewater industry was influenced by my passion for environmental protection and fascination with the technical and operational challenges of wastewater treatment.

Growing up, my father worked as an operator, which sparked my initial interest. After high school, my mother introduced me to the Tri-Valley Regional Occupational Program for wastewater operations, where I discovered my calling in this vital field.

What do you like most about our industry?

I love the chance to make a meaningful impact on public health and environmental sustainability while constantly learning and tackling new challenges.

What’s truly special about this industry is the incredible people I’ve met and the diverse places I’ve worked in. These experiences not only enhanced my skills but also made my journey in wastewater truly rewarding and enjoyable.

What do you recommend to students who want to get into the profession?

Focus on studying hard, passing exams, and earning certifications early to show your dedication and foundational knowledge. Seek hands-on experience through internships and stay curious about wastewater science and technology.

Networking through organizations like CWEA is invaluable. Cultivate patience, consistency, and a positive attitude, as these qualities are crucial for success in the field.

I wholeheartedly recommend this path to others—it’s a career rich with purpose and a chance to make a meaningful impact, all while enjoying the camaraderie of a dedicated community.

How did you get involved as a CWEA volunteer and what do you like about volunteering?

I got involved with CWEA after attending the Redwood Empire Section Annual Awards Dinner, where I was deeply inspired by the dedication and passion of those involved.

Seeing the impact of the board’s work and the collective commitment to our industry moved me to contribute more actively.

I find volunteering incredibly fulfilling because it allows me to give back, share my knowledge, and collaborate with others who share my commitment to improving our field.
