For Santiago, the journey to a career in water and environmental science has been one of discovery, dedication, and determination. From his early days in community college to hands-on experience in a wastewater lab, he has embraced every opportunity to grow and learn. Now in his final year at UC Davis, majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Santiago is well on his way to making a meaningful impact in the industry—thanks in part to the Kirt Brooks Memorial Water Environment Scholarship.
When Santiago’s former lab manager, Matt Anderson, suggested he apply for the Kirt Brooks Scholarship, he saw it as an opportunity to help him move forward in his academic journey. Receiving the scholarship provided much-needed financial support, allowing him to focus on his studies while covering housing and food expenses at UC Davis.
After high school, Santiago chose to start his education at a community college, where he pursued a double major in Biology and Chemistry. It was a time of immense growth, as he balanced academics with full-time work to support his family. Determined to gain hands-on experience, he secured an internship at the San Luis Obispo Wastewater Treatment Plant during his final year. That opportunity led to a summer position as a Lab Analyst, where he gained valuable skills that reinforced his passion for environmental science.
Now, as he prepares to graduate, Santiago reflects on how each step—his education, work, and industry experience—has helped him build a strong foundation for a career in the water environment industry.
Santiago’s advice for students entering the field is simple: keep pushing forward, and trust that your hard work will pay off.
“Life will find a way to reward your efforts, even if it isn’t immediately apparent,” he shares.

The Kirt Brooks Scholarship, offered by CWEA, supports students pursuing careers in the water environment industry. Available to CWEA members or students sponsored by a CWEA member, the scholarship provides financial assistance to help shape the next generation of industry leaders.
Applications are due April 25, with recipients notified in May or June. Scholarship funds are disbursed directly to schools and programs between September 15 and October 15.
